What a Long Strange Day It's Been

by Sun Star

Amy paced around the large room. Kate was so excited she was practically bouncing off the walls.

"Ok guys. I think I'm ready." Kelly appeared from behind a curtain, her dress a massive frothy creation made from yards of lace and tulle. The skirt had full hoops underneath and was covered with a lace overskirt.

"Oh you look beautiful." Kate gushed, reaching down to fix Kelly's long train.

"Do you think so? Amy?" Kelly turned to Amy, the curls hanging from her elaborate up-do bouncing as she turned.

"What? Oh, sorry. I was spacing out there for a moment."

She took in Kelly's dress. "You, uh, you look great."

Kelly beamed. She pulled the girls into a bear hug. "You guys are the best. Thanks so much for being here with me." There was a knock and Kelly jumped. "Ohmigosh! I don't want anyone to see me." She pushed Amy toward the door. "Answer it please."

Four girls in matching sea green chiffon were standing on the other side. "Hi!" They called when she opened the door.

Amy leaned back inside. "It's the others."

"Let them in." Kelly said. Amy moved out of the way, barely missing being trampled by the girls rushing in to see Kelly.

For the first time, Amy noticed her dress. It was designed to look like a prom dress from the 1950s. The sea green chiffon flared out from the waist in a full, puffy skirt held out by lots of itchy crinoline.

"Oh wow, Kel. That dress is fabulous." Chrissy blathered.

"Thanks so much. You guys look great too." Kelly told them. She clapped her hands to get everyone's attention. "I just wanted to make sure that everyone knows each other." She pointed to each girl, saying her name in turn. "Amy, Ren, Chrissy, Liz, Kate and Asher."

Each girl was wearing the sea green number, her hair done in a tight French twist. Classic strands of pearls hung around their necks and from their ears. Looking around, Amy felt as if she was looking at different colored carbon copies. She glanced at Kate for a moment and then back to the infamous Asher she'd heard so much about. Doing a double take, she made her way over to Kelly.

"Hey, Kel." She said softly.

Kelly turned to her. "What's up?"

"Look at Kate and Asher." The two young women in question were standing next to each other talking. Liz started laughing and they both turned to look at her, putting their backs to Amy and Kelly.

"What about the?"

Amy looked at her in shock. "What about them?! Kel, they're the same height, they have the same hair, same face. Everything except the eyes. And Asher's hair is curly."

"I think you're exaggerating a little. It's probably the dresses."

The girls still had their backs to them. "Ok, which one's Kate?"

"The one on the left." Kelly said with certainty.

Amy smiled. "Hey Kate!" She called.

The one on the right turned around. "Yeah, Aim?"

Amy shook her head. "Nothing. Never mind, I'll tell you later." She turned back to Kelly. "See?"

"Ok, maybe they look a little alike."

"Kel, they could be twins."

"Yeah, except Asher's a couple of thousand years older than Kate." She looked at the clock on the wall. "It's time to start."

"Besides that, they could be." Amy insisted.

"If you says so." Kelly told her before turning back to the room. "Ok, everybody. It's show time."

Amy took her place in like between Kate and Chrissy. She leaned toward Kate. "Did you notice anything weird about Asher?"

"You mean beside the fact that she acts like us and is over two thousand?" Kate hissed back.

"Yeah."

Kate shook her head. "No. Why?"

Amy rolled her eyes. "You could be twins."

"We could not." Kate turned and looked at her incredulously.

Amy nodded. "Yeah, you could."

Kate was going to say something more but it was her turn to walk. Soon, Amy followed her down the aisle and took her place. She looked across at Duncan, the best man, who was dressed in a kilt with full Scottish regalia. She raised her eyebrow at him. He mouthed back, 'Kelly insisted.'

She put her bouquet to cover her smiled. Chrissy elbowed her as she took her place.

"Knock it off. " She whispered.

The music changed and Kelly appeared in the doorway on her father's arm. Everyone in the church murmured how beautiful she looked as they stood. After what seemed like an eternity, they reached the altar. Richie joined them on the steps, grinning like an idiot.

The ceremony began Kelly and Richie staring at each other, ignoring almost everything else. Everything was going beautifully until the priest asked if there were any objections to the marriage.

"Aye! I 'ave an objection t' this marriage." The guests gasped as Duncan stepped forward, his Scottish accent thick.

Richie stared at him in shock. "Mac? What are you doing?"

Duncan drew his katana. "Ye shood be dead, Richie Ryan. 'Tis my responsibility."

Kelly screamed and fainted. All bridesmaids, except Amy, circled her, watching the scene play out.

"Mac, we can't fight here. It's holy ground." Richie protested, drawing his own sword for protection. He backed up but found Methos' sword at his back.

"Sorry Ryan. This is the way it's supposed to be." The oldest Immortal waved the young man forward.

"Who said it is?" He demanded refusing to move.

"If you don't die, Mac never goes through his grieving period and cuts his hair." Asher stepped forward. "Let's go Richie."

"Aww, Ash. You too?"

She shrugged. "Sorry. They're right. You're not supposed to be here."

"So you're telling me this is all because if I don't die, he doesn't cut his hair?" Richie demanded pointing at Duncan.

Asher shrugged and pushed him along. "Hey, just doing my job."

The three Immortals led Richie out of the church. The guests and the rest of the bridal party looked around in shock, wondering what just happened. Kelly had revived and was screaming at Joe. Looking around at everything, Amy had a strange feeling she didn't belong here and that she was supposed to know what they were talking about but she couldn't place her finger on what exactly it was.

"This is your fault!"

Amy looked up to see Kelly attacking Joe. She swung her bouquet at the older man, the bridesmaids watching with a smirk. Amy grabbed Kate's arm suddenly and turned her around. Bright blue eyes met hers and Amy jumped back.

"You're not Kate."

Amy sat straight up in bed, breathing hard. She took a puff off her inhaler and shook her head to clear it. Getting a bottle of water from the fridge, she went next door.

Kate and Kelly sitting on Kate's bed pouring over a small stack of magazines. They looked up when she came in.

"Hey Aim. You okay?" Kate asked as she came in and flopped on the floor.

"I just had the most bizarre dream." She took a sip of her water. "We'd already graduated, but you and I were med students." Kate started laughing at the thought of her being a med student. Amy pointed at Kelly. "You worked for some secret organization who watched people called Immortals but you couldn't tell us that so we thought you were a librarian or something."

Kelly and Kate were exchanging 'she's lost it' looks. "I don't think you should be allowed to sleep after lunch anymore." Kelly told her.

"That wasn't even the weirdest part."

Amy finished her story and leaned back. "To top it all off, the bridesmaids were wearing a dress that looked liked the one Sandy wore at the dance in Grease but it was sea green. You're dress was worse though." She described the dress. "And everyone was gushing over it, saying how great and beautiful it was."

"Sounds pretty horrible." Kelly said.

Amy nodded. "You were all really perky too."

Kate tossed one of the magazines down. "I think you have weddings on the brain, Aim. Too much planning of your own."

"I guess so. What were you guys doing?" She picked up the magazine at her feet.

"Looking at hairstyles for your wedding." Kelly told her.

Amy groaned. "Arghh. I can't escape it."

"Hullo." A soft British accent made them turn to the door. "I'm new here. Just moved in down the hall. Room 204. Just thought I'd meet the neighbors."

Amy's mouth dropped open. She closed it quickly. "Uh, hi."

"I'm Kate and this is Kelly and Amy. Amy lives in 206 and Kel lives off campus." Kate told her.

"But when I'm here I live in Kate's room." Kelly added.

The young woman smiled her blue eyes twinkling. "Nice to meet you all. I'm Asher."
